PREHISTORIC BIRDS

1.How did birds develop?

Scientists believe that birds developed from dinosaurs. They have discovered the fossil remains of feathered dinosaurs that many people believe proves birds are descended from dinosaurs. The fossils were of Dromaeosaur dinosaurs. They could not fly but had fluffy down on their bodies and short arms covered with feathers.

2.What is the oldest known bird?

Archaeopteryx is the oldest known bird in the world. It flew in ancient skies about 150 million years ago. It was a meat-eating bird about the size of a crow that probably flew fairly short distances at a time. It had feathers like a bird, but it also had teeth and clawed hands rather like a dinosaur.

3.Which was the largest bird?

The largest of the prehistoric birds was Aepyornis, also called the elephant bird. It was 3 meters tall and weighed about 450 kilograms. It also laid the biggest eggs of all time-some were almost a meter long. Another flightless bird wad Dinormis, Which grew to 3.5 meters high. It was the tallest bird that ever lived. Both birds had strong, thick legs, a long neck, and a bulky body.

4.What was the monster bird?

The monster bird was  Teratornis, a prehistoric creature that looked rather like a giant condor. It had a wingspan of roughly 5 to 7 meters. It flew about searching for the dead bodies of other animals to eat. Its remains have been found in tar pits in California, USA, where the bird was presumably trapped when it came down to feed.
